At the CAMPUS project meeting in Finland, representatives of the Central Anatolian Regional Innovation Agency (KDRIÜ) introduced the Tampere System-on-Chip Hub cooperation model.
The joint initiative of Tampere University, Nokia and several technology companies shows how a digital campus can become a real development environment.
System chips developed jointly
A System-on-Chip, or SoC for short, is a system chip that combines several computing functions on a single integrated circuit. A modern chip can contain billions of transistors, and its development requires the collaborative efforts of hundreds of experts over several years.
In the Tampere region, companies have experienced increasing competition for qualified chip design professionals. Therefore, in 2020, Tampere University and Nokia launched a collaboration that simultaneously supports technology development and the supply of skilled professionals.
In the first program, the university and corporate partners developed three complex system chips in three years. The students were able to work with experienced engineers on real industrial tasks, and the smaller companies could get involved by developing individual components.
A common, secure digital work environment
The participants had to have access to the same plans, development tools, and code repositories. Therefore, a digital campus based on university infrastructure was created.
The system enables students, researchers and corporate professionals from different locations to work together in a coordinated manner. In addition to a common environment, precise access rules and protection of corporate knowledge are also required.
What can be used from this in Central Transdanubia?
The regional cybersecurity platform designed by the KDRIÜ is of course not intended for the development of system chips. However, the operational principles of the Tampere model can be well adapted:
- the cooperation should be based on a specific common challenge;
- all participants can be involved according to their own knowledge and capacity;
- the relationship building is complemented by practical tasks and common tools;
- training and professional development should be one of the basic functions of the platform;
- Trust and the protection of confidential information should be present from the planning stage.
As in the Tampere example, a digital campus is not primarily valued by the applied IT interface. The real result is what participants are able to create together.
